Check Filet Mesh Counts and Row Direction
Distinguish mesh counts from stitch positions and use the printed convention to review a filet chart.
Keep the Unit Explicit
One chart square means one mesh. A dark square is filled; a blank square is open mesh rather than missing fabric. Do not treat the occupied-cell count like a cross-stitch count or a bead quantity. The legend identifies the unit on the printout.
Use the Span as a Check, Not a Starting Chain
A row of N meshes spans 3N + 1 stitch positions under this convention. For example, 8 meshes span 25 positions. This value includes positions represented by chain spaces. It is not the number of foundation chains to make, and it does not include a complete turning method.
Check Each Row Against the Grid
The row guide lists consecutive open and filled mesh runs. Their lengths should add to the chart width. Follow the arrow from the selected starting side; rows are numbered upward from the bottom. A symmetrical sample can hide a direction mistake, so also inspect an asymmetric part of your own motif.
Continue Across Page Ranges
Chart pages show global row and column ranges. Match those ranges when a row crosses pages and do not repeat an edge mesh: pages have no overlap. Keep the convention and row guide available while working, rather than using a cropped chart image without its legend.
Validate a Small Swatch
Choose a section containing both open and filled meshes. Compare its physical proportions and counting with the chart before starting the full piece. Record any project-specific instructions separately. MotifDraft does not yet provide a physically validated filet example or construction pattern.
Before you start
- The 4-dc US convention matches your method.
- Run lengths sum to the mesh width.
- Starting chains come from a tested method.
- Page boundaries are followed without repeating meshes.
Filet crochet Questions
Can I select a different mesh convention?
Not in this version. Only the explicitly described 4-dc convention is supported.
Does an open mesh count as an empty cell?
It is visually blank but still represents an open mesh in the fabric. It is included in the open-mesh and total-mesh counts.
