Add Names and Short Messages to Your Pattern

Preview block lettering, fit it to your chart and preserve the result in any of the five makers.

Choose the Craft and Canvas First

Open your maker and start a blank grid, or save a copy of an existing motif before adding text. Each letter becomes normal chart cells: crosses, beads, filled filet meshes or your selected crochet units. The text tool does not supply foundation chains or construction instructions.

Write a Short Message

In Settings, expand Add lettering. The built-in block alphabet supports A–Z, 0–9, spaces, line breaks and the displayed punctuation. Lowercase becomes uppercase. Accented characters, emoji and other scripts are not supported and produce a clear error. Use up to four lines and 80 characters; the available canvas can impose a smaller practical limit.

Fit the Letters Before Placing Them

A letter is five cells wide and seven cells high at 1×. Scale increases both dimensions; line alignment places shorter lines within the longest line. The preview reports the complete rectangle. Move it using a column from the left and a row from the top, even in a bottom-up crochet chart. If it will not fit, shorten it, add a line break, reduce scale or resize the canvas.

Choose What Happens to the Background

Select a material in Colors. By default, only the letter cells change and spaces leave the existing artwork untouched. Clear empty cells inside the text rectangle also removes the background within that rectangle; for filet these become open meshes. Review the changed-cell and occupied-cell counts. Replacing occupied cells asks for confirmation.

Place, Review and Keep a Copy

Choose Place lettering. One Undo restores the entire placement. The result is editable cells, not a separate text layer; use Undo and place again to correct a recent message, or edit cells directly. Save to My projects or download JSON. Print a small section and make a swatch before using the design at full size, especially when crochet stitches are not square.

Before you start

  • The complete message fits without clipping.
  • The top-left placement coordinates are understood.
  • The background-clearing choice is intentional.
  • A saved copy or JSON backup exists before further edits.

Saving & printing Questions

Can I use lettering in every maker?

Yes. The same block alphabet becomes ordinary cells under each maker’s rules. Filet supports one filled-mesh color; the other makers use the selected material.

Can I edit the words after placement?

They are no longer a text object. Undo the placement and enter the corrected words, or change the cells manually. The text settings themselves are not part of a saved project.

Does Make mode allow text changes?

No. Switch to Design first. Placing text clears completion marks on affected rows, like other cell edits.
