Check the Chart’s Working Mode

This guide uses a single-crochet colorwork grid viewed from the front. The sample starts at the bottom right. Flat mode alternates row direction; unturned rounds use the same direction. Choose the mode that matches your actual method.

Read Colors and Row Numbers

Row 1 is the bottom row; column 1 is the leftmost column. Each assigned cell represents one colorwork stitch. An unassigned cell needs a background-color decision; it is not an instruction to skip a stitch or make a hole.

Follow Direction Arrows

With right-to-left selected, row 1 reads ← and flat row 2 reads →. Selecting left-to-right reverses that sequence. The current-row selector highlights the row on screen and lists its runs in the same working order.

Count Color Changes Within a Row

A run such as A × 4, B × 2 means four cells of A followed by two of B. Include unassigned cells when checking that the sum equals the chart width. Repeated colors separated by another color remain separate runs.

Compare the Chart with a Test Swatch

Measure stitches and rows over 10 cm and enter both values. With Keep image proportions enabled, uploaded images use your width, cropped image shape and gauge to calculate the nearest whole row count. For a square image, 32 stitches at a gauge of 20 stitches and 10 rows per 10 cm gives 16 rows and a 16 × 16 cm design. Generate again after changing gauge or crop. Turn the option off for a manually sized chart. Printed cells remain square references; physical swatch validation is still pending.

Fix Common Reading Mistakes

Check whether you are reading from the bottom, whether the row arrow matches your work and whether your method turns after each row. A stretched motif may mean the gauge differs from the preview. The chart does not teach yarn carrying, joins or shaping.

Can I make a chart of my cat for a crochet bag?

Yes. Crop around the face, choose a small yarn palette and enter the gauge from your swatch. Review the eyes and outline after conversion. The result is a colorwork chart for your bag panel; handles, shaping and assembly instructions are not generated.

Does the chart show the color changes for each row?

The row guide lists consecutive color runs in working order, including unassigned cells. Run counts sum to the chart width.

Does this generate a complete crochet pattern?

It produces a chart and ordered color runs. Construction, shaping and yarn-handling instructions remain your responsibility.

Why should I adjust stitch proportions?

Your swatch may not have square stitches. Gauge changes the preview and size estimate. With Keep image proportions enabled, the next image generation also adjusts its row count to preserve the cropped motif’s shape.

How do I choose the row direction?

Set the first direction and choose flat rows or unturned rounds. Follow the printed arrows and check against your actual working method.

Can I use more than two colors?

Yes. Use up to 12 custom yarn colors, rename them to match your materials, and review color changes in each row.

Will the chart guarantee the finished size?

No. Yarn, hook and tension affect the result. Make and measure a physical sample before a large project.
